The fix to a downstem stuck or broken in a bong

Don't want a broken glass piecce

The nightmare has begun, a simple cleaning day is halted by a downste1m that has become stuck in the bong. You try twisting and jiggling, but the downstem will not break free of the bong, now what?

To find a solution, we first have to understand the problem. When the male taper from the downstem seals with the female taper of the bong the conical surfaces come into contact. Because of manufacturing limits, the tapers are not perfectly matched, this forces the taper faces to contact with a non-uniform seal. Depending upon how the seal is made, water from the bong and other contaminates can wick their way into the irregular interface. Ultimately, the combined friction from the non-uniform seal and contamination becomes too large to overcome. To compound this, the frosted surfaces of the tapers can produce a glass on glass molecular “fusion”.

Poor glass bong seal

There are a few methods to free the downstem from the bong, but you should keep in mind that any attempt to remove your downstem may break it, the bong, or both. Once you’ve prepared yourself for potential loss, it’s time to dive in. You should WEAR SAFETY GLASSES for any of these methods, you don’t want glass in your eye!

Hopefully, you made it through with at least your bong intact and will never have to go through this again, but you know what they say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. So how can we prevent the downstem from seizing in the bong in the future?

Great bong Seal

The single best solution is with a downstem that is specially designed not to bind to the bong taper, enter Invincipole. The Invincipole has a patented pressure-lock-and-release taper which removes the irregularity of glass-on-glass interface. The Invincipole taper is constructed with two coaxial steps machined into its hard anodized body. When installing our downstem into the bong the first thing to come into contact is the smaller coaxial step which forms a sealed ring with the bong taper. The second coaxial step is slightly undersized and does not fully contact the joint. The first step makes the seal, the second step keeps the downstem from wobbling around.

When it comes to removing the Invincipole, simply press on the hex head with a little off-axis force and the downstem will make a “click” sound. See our video here. The slight under sizing of the second coaxial step provides the tiny bit of motion necessary to break the seal. You can now slide out your downstem for easy cleaning! Clean your bong, Invincipole and Invincibowl with 70% isopropyl alcohol and salt for best results.

The Invincibowl is designed to handle the roughest treatment, including hammering the bowl edge on hard surfaces to clear the ash that has collected after smoking. Depending upon the roughness of the surface upon which the bowl is hit, there is the potential for damage to the anodized surface. While it may not be the most visually appealing, this exposed aluminum is no cause for concern, because in actuality, there is no such thing as exposed aluminum. How can that be?
When a surface of aluminum is exposed to air by machining, abrasion or by tapping out your bowl, the oxygen molecules in the air react with the aluminum atoms on the metal’s surface to quickly form a thin layer of aluminum oxide. This hard aluminum oxide layer protects the aluminum and prevents direct contact of the pure aluminum with the environment. Air and water molecules (or any liquid for that matter) are too large to move past this tightly packed surface coating, protecting the aluminum from corrosion and erosion.
It is very easy to compare this naturally occurring protective coating with the hard anodized coating that comes on all Invincibowl products. The colored anodizing is formed when electrochemical processes convert the raw aluminum surface to an anodic oxide finish, which is simply a highly-ordered, thicker coating of pure aluminum oxide.

At a chemical level, the aluminum acquires a positive charge by transferring electrons to the oxygen atoms of a neutral O2 molecule. This results in the oxygen atoms acquiring a negative charge which makes them into oxide atoms. The negative and positive charges attract each other and an atomically bonded layer of aluminum oxide is formed on the surface. The stoichiometric ratio breaks down like this:

4 Al(s) + 3 O2  2 AL2O3 (s)

Aluminum oxide, or alumina, is an bio-inert, odorless, amorphous material that is used in a significant number of applications, including hip replacements, dental crowns and other bionic implants. Measurements of the growth of aluminum oxide on aluminum substrates have been performed at atomic levels, revealing the growth of the structures over time. This insightful and cutting-edge work shows the aluminum oxide coating forming on top of the crystalline aluminum substrate.

In short, when some of the colored coating gets removed, it is quickly replaced by a naturally occurring clear anodized coating, ensuring that pure aluminum is never exposed to the environment. With this new knowledge, you can smoke from any of our devices assured that your safety is taken care of.
You might still be worried about aluminum in general, but here again, there is no cause for concern. Aluminum is one of the most abundant metals on the surface of the earth. It can be found in trace amounts in everyday items from antacids to sunscreen and even in the food and water you ingest. There have only been loose connections made between the intake of aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease, and the studies that produced these connections were done on metal foundry workers exposed to thousands of milligrams (or more) per day over long periods of time. Significantly more than could ever be ingested by smoking out of a device that, in its entirety, is only 1600 milligrams.

With so many different options on the market today, you might find yourself wondering, is it even safe to smoke out of metal? The truth is, it depends on what metals you’re choosing, how these metals are processed, and whether or not the company has a proper chain of custody. We’re going to have to use a little science and engineering to understand how metals react to heat,  but we’ll try and keep it simple, the full equations are much more complicated.

Let us consider the three most common types of metals used when smoking flower: brass, aluminum, and stainless steel. To evaluate if a metal will release air-borne atoms when exposed to heat we need to take into account three parameters: the melting point (both for liquid and gas phase), the Specific Heat Capacity (how much energy needs to be put into an object to raise its temperature), and the mass/shape of the object. To help explain how these parameters interact, we will use our old friend water as a base line, more specifically an ice cube from your freezer. Water turns to liquid at 0˚C and turns to gas at 100˚C and it has a specific heat capacitance of 1 Btu. If you were to flick your lighter and hold it up to the ice cube, over time the ice would melt into water and then if you were to hold the lit lighter over the pool of water eventually the water would heat up, turn into a gas, and escape into the room. As you can imagine, this process could take hours to fully vaporize all of the water of the ice cube, due to the specific heat capacity of water and the mass/shape of the ice cube. Now consider that instead of an ice cube from your freezer we look at a snowflake the size of a quarter and as thin as a piece of paper, it has much less mass than the ice cube and the mass is very spread out. If you flick your lighter under the center of the snowflake you will see it very quickly evaporate, the lighter is hot enough to take the water from the solid phase, right through the liquid phase and into the gas phase.

bong bowls and heat conduction

Circling back, let’s consider the three types of metals in two forms: thick like an ice cube or 14mm bong bowl, and thin like a snowflake or screen. In the case of a thick object, all three metals will stand up to a lighter’s max temperature of 1970 ̊C. The specific heat capacity as well as other thermal transfer properties ensure that heat introduced can be passed through and radiate away from the metal before the melting temperature is reached. This is not true for thin objects, like a screen. Aluminum screens aren’t available, so we can eliminate them from the discussion. Brass has a melting point of 900˚C and stainless steel has a melting point of 1500 ̊C. While at first it would seem that both screens would burn with a lighter, more detailed thermal analysis reveals that the lower specific heat capacity and higher thermal conductivity of brass allow the screen to heat up rapidly and reach melting temperatures quite quickly. Stainless steel’s 600 degree advantage over brass and more stable thermal properties make them impervious to a lighter’s flame, even a mini torch can’t damage this metal!

Now let’s switch gears to something called chain of custody. This tracks the product from manufacturing, to shipping, to assembly, and on to shelves for sale. Safeguarding the process is just as important as what materials you choose to use. Purchasing cheap knock-offs puts the consumer at risk of poor quality materials. For example, many types of brass contain up to 8% lead (which melts at 327˚C), leaving the consumer to guess if they are getting lead-free brass or not. We at Invincibowl keep a close eye on our manufacturing and know definitively that our products are made of hard anodized 6061 aluminum and 304 stainless steel.

We go above and beyond to ensure that our customers are consuming their cannabis in the safest way possible. In addition to choosing the most durable and chemically inert materials, we have created a proprietary secure-screen system. This system permits your flower to be in contact with only 304 surgical stainless steel. The insert and the screen are what make up the structure of this system. The insert holds the screen in place allowing the user to easily flip over the bong bowl to discard ash.

Both stainless steel and anodized aluminum are corrosion and oxidation-resistant. This makes them easy to sanitize and promotes sustainability and re-use. Brass on the other hand can oxidize when in contact with water which causes it to tarnish to a black-green color.

In summary, we would not recommend brass in any configuration. Screens will definitely melt with continuous lighter exposure, while thicker pipes may have 2-8% lead content which could leech from the brass, putting you at risk. There is no configuration where stainless steel is subject to erosion by a lighter’s flame and is safe to use for both screens and pipes. Aluminum is protected from melting and erosion when in bulkier forms, and a hard anodized coating ensures that the entire object maintains cohesion.

Shopping at a dispensary can be overwhelming with hundreds of amazing products on the market today. These goodies range from edibles to prerolls, potions, gummies, and even accessories. When purchasing flower, you’ll notice strains are broken up into three categories: indica, sativa, and hybrid. If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is, we’re here to help.

There are several differences between strains ranging from plant height, stature, the length between stalks, leaf size, leaf structure, bud size, bud density, flowering time, odor, and the most commonly discussed, effects.

Sativa vs IndicaIndica plants tend to be on the bushier side with large, short bulky leaves that grow broadly. Their leafy widespread stems even produce more buds per plant. It’s also been noted that indica plants tend to grow quicker than sativa plants. While indica strains are known primarily for their alleviating properties, they’re great for sleep and anxiety too.

In contrast, sativa plants are taller with longer stems and thinner leaves. They also take longer to mature during the flowering stage compared to indica. Sativa strains are often associated with an energizing and productive high while a hybrid strain offers the best of both worlds. Pop either strain into your Invincibowl for the smoothest high!

Often times it’s forgotten that the compounds that determine the effects of cannabis strains are largely based on terpenes and cannabinoids. There are dozens of different terpenes and even more cannabinoids!

Terpenes are the essential oils that give cannabis strains their distinctive scent and unique flavor. Some of these terpenes include myrcene, limonene, pinene, b-caryophyllene, linalool, etc. To understand their effects on you, start by keeping a journal to track results. This will help you narrow down your preferences!

So how do terpenes differ from cannabinoids? Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in cannabis. Most commonly known are THC and CBD but, there are over a hundred! They are chemical compounds secreted by cannabis flowers and provide relief for a vast array of symptoms. These compounds mimic naturally occurring compounds in our bodies and facilitate communication between cells. There’s a lot more science that goes into it, but basically, cannabis is magic.

Remember to ask your budtender about the best option for you the next time you’re shopping around!

Bong Accessory Measurement Guide

Picking the right size downstem and bowl can be a hassle if you don’t know how to measure your glassware properly. It’s important to find the one with a perfect fit because snug placement and proper length will determine the effectiveness of your water filtration. That’s why we’ve created a simple guide to help you effortlessly determine the best fit for your smoking accessories.

How to find your bong bowl sizeTo obtain a proper measurement of the bowl, you will  need thrhee household items: AAA battery, AA battery, and a dime. A 14mm bowl is the most common size, and consequently the size of all Invincibowls, so we’ll start there. Hold an AA battery next to the taper of your bowl, if they are nearly identical in size, then you have a 14mm. If your taper is smaller, try out the AAA which is nearly identical in size to a 10mm bowl; and if your taper is larger, try out the dime.

Downstem fit

To size your downstem taper you can use the same three items above. 18mm is the most common size of bong receptacle so start with the dime, turn the dime sideways (as shown in image) and slide it into the bong taper. You should only be able to insert it a short distance before it will bottom out. DO NOT INSERT THE DIME FLAT, IT MAY GET STUCK! If the dime doesn’t go in at all, try out the AA or AAA batteries, they will go a small distance into the bong taper if you have a 14mm or 10mm respectively.

Downstem lengths

The Invincipole is an 18mm adjustable downstem which extends and retracts to fit the most commonly distributed bongs. It collapses to a functional 3 inches and stretches out to an impressive 5 ¾ measuring just under 6 inches. This gives owners of the Invincipole seven common sizes to choose from, as well as all fractional sizes in between! This saves you the inconvenience of having to evaluate your bong’s acceptance depth and gives you peace of mind knowing that your unbreakable downstem will fit all your bongs for years to come. If for some reason, you prefer a standard glass downstem, here is how you measure the length.

For measurement of your bong’s acceptance depth, you will need two additional items: a pencil (or another long cylindrical item) and a ruler. Next, slide your pencil inside your bong and hover just above the bottom of the glass. You’ll need to measure starting from where the end of the joint meets the wall of your bong. Mark the distance on the pencil and withdraw the item. Now using a ruler or measuring tape, determine the length of your downstem.

How to find your downstem lengthIt is important that your downstem reach the bottom of the bong while engaging the taper fully. This will ensure that the smoke travels through the most water giving you maximum filtration. Fixed downstems often leave some fractional gap at the bottom due to manufacturing tolerances. Our adjustable downstem will get right to the bottom of your bong, giving you the cleanest hit, guaranteed! Pick up your Invincipole, or for even cleaner water, try the Invinci-bundle.

Using CBD for Sleep

Studies show that more and more Americans are having difficulty falling asleep. If you need some help getting to bed, consider CBD. It is derived from the hemp plant, a close relative of the cannabis plant. It is a naturally occurring molecule that is used in products like CBD flower, oils, gummies, and other edibles to induce feelings of tranquility and relaxation. CBD is not psychoactive. Educating yourself on the wide range of selections can be the key determining factor in your sleep journey.  Sleep and CBD

CBD can be used in a variety of ways. Whether you need help retiring your mind for the night, alleviating aches, and pains, or even anxiety.  It can be the compound that encourages well-being.

If you need help falling asleep then something fast-acting, like CBD flower, would be the best option. Smoking flower is one of the quickest ways to get CBD into your system. Bust out your Invincibowl and experience the smooth flavor and calming effects. Your Invincibowl won’t alter the taste of your CBD or other products. Instead, it’ll make for an effortless draw and clean hit.

The second fastest delivery method is via a sublingual oil. CBD oil drops will allow you to get a high dose of CBD quickly and you’ll start feeling the effects in 30 minutes or less. This is a great alternative for those looking to have results settle in after your nighttime routine. A drop or three under your tongue as you’re getting ready to bring the day to a close and you’ll be ready for sleep in no time!

Remember, CBD oils are not the same as CBD tinctures. CBD oils are commonly made with just two ingredients: CBD and a carrier oil. The oil is extracted for seeds, flower, or stalks of the hemp plant. The carrier oils can be a blend of coconut oil, vegetable glycerin base, or hemp seed oil. While CBD tinctures are alcohol-based extracts. This means they use high-proof alcohol to steep the plant material.

Stop by a local dispensary and discuss the benefits of CBD with your budtender. There are tons of options on the market and they’ll help you make the best decision for your particular needs.

Why Stainless Steel Screens Are Better Than Brass Screens

Best bong screen

One component of smoking from a piece that’s often overlooked is the usage of screens. Mainly, which material is more effective: brass or stainless steel pipe screens? Screens guarantee a cleaner smoking experience, but not all screens are built alike. The type of metal you choose could significantly alter the taste of your herbs.

Why use screens?

Using a screen can notably reduce the amount of particulate matter deposited into your bong water. The ideal screen is durable, precision engineered to fit your existing setup, and can withstand the heat of your lighter.

But, the real difference between brass and stainless steel pipe screens is how they deal with the heat from a standard lighter.

Stainless Steel Screens

Hidden Risks of Brass Screens

When it comes to brass or stainless steel pipe screens, there are several things to consider. Although brass screens are slightly cheaper, you certainly get what you pay for. Traditional brass screens burn to a crisp since they have unstable states of matter and are more susceptible to heat.

So, just how susceptible to heat are traditional brass screens? It's low melting point of 898˚C is no competition for your lighter which can produce a flame reaching 1970˚C at the hottest point. It's no wonder a pocket lighter could burn a hole right through the center of the screen.

Repeated and prolonged exposure to harmful chemicals may produce health deterioration. The intense heat will produce a metallic taste that will contaminate your smoke and general well-being.

What About Stainless Steel Screens?

Stainless steel screens offer the best filtration without the anxiety of pollutants. While they are marginally more expensive, the design and capabilities alone make it worthwhile.

These hearty screens have a melting temperature over 1450˚C which makes them nearly invulnerable to a pocket lighter or mini-torch. A single screen has been cycled hundreds of times without material integrity breakdown! These high-quality barriers are a sustainable and more reliable option.

Find Your Screen Now

As you can see, when it comes to the best bong screens, the wisest choice is stainless steel. If you are already a fan of the indestructible Invincibowl, you already know about the quality screens. New screens are easily available direct from Invincibowl in convenient 25-packs

Each screen is guaranteed to last for 20 smoke sessions, That means a single 25 pack of screens yields 500 bowls! You won’t need new screens for quite a while. The screens also make bowl cleaning a breeze; simply invert your bowl to empty ash using our one-of-a-kind Secure-Screen System. The screens are fine enough to trap the ash but not so fine that airflow is restricted.

Invincibowl: One Of The Cleanest Ways to Smoke Weed

person smoking product in a bong

It may be common knowledge that bongs are one of the cleanest ways to smoke weed. However, many smokers may not be aware that typical glass bowls and downstems severely impact their clean smoking experience. Most bowls are not made to fit screens and, what’s worse, the screens you commonly purchase at a smoke shop are made of woven mesh that will only last a few tokes before they clog up.

There are solutions that can elevate your smoking experience, whether it is weed or tobacco, and we want to break it down for you as your trusted friends in the industry.

Clean Smoking: A Growing Consideration

Since Colorado passed amendment 64 in 2012, the state has seen a surge of sales in the marijuana industry, boasting well over $10 billion since legalization and billions in tax revenue. Legalized marijuana has become a facet of day-to- day life as more Americans begin to welcome the benefits of cannabis.

Bongs are by far the most prominent smoking apparatus on the market. There is no shortage of intricate and expensive glassware. With over 55 million adults smoking, you need options!

You no longer have to subject yourself to using a dirty bong day after day. Pair our accessories with your bongs to experience the difference — it’s the cleanest way to smoke weed!

A Clean Bong Sparks Joy

Most who have dabbled in weed are aware of how a bong works. It all comes down to how the smoke gets filtered. The smoke travels from the bowl into the downstem and then gets filtered by the water before ascending the bong’s neckpiece. The water does a lot of filtering, but what if there was another way? A better way?

Traditional smoking screens do not effortlessly glide into your bowl. They are jammed into place and held by way of resin. Most will also burn to a crisp within a few uses. That's not even the worst part! Conventional brass screens leak contaminants such as zinc and copper, which is hazardous to a user’s health. The Invincibowl's shatterproof design is equipped with a propriety high-flow mesh smoking screen. It's held in place via our revolutionary Secure-Screen technology. This allows the user to easily tap out herbal ash without losing the screen in the process and also provides a clean smoking experience.

Glass downstems are incredibly fragile. Eliminate the hassle and provide additional protection by investing in an Invincipole. The component is unbreakable, retractable, and houses a second screen. The durability and functionality are unbeatable.

Glass bowls and downstem combinations release ash and other waste elements into the bong water. As you can imagine, increasing the concentration of ash and waste elements in bong water makes the water less effective at filtering smoke. More waste elements in your bong water give rise to airborne particles that can bubble up from your water when pulling in medicated smoke, and travel into your lungs. Pairing the Invincibowl and Invincipole with your bong will remove nearly all of these harmful particles, giving you the cleanest way to smoke weed time and time again.

Clean Smoking with Invincibowl?

Owning a bowl and downstem is essential. Selecting from a variety of vibrant colors is even more essential. Pair your bowl and downstem in matching colors or collect them all for a fun mix-match!

Your bundle will pay for itself within the first 3 drops. Plus, we offer a lifetime warranty! The Invinci-bundle will save you cash and save your lungs from ash, what's not to love?
